( To Be One Ask One )

How Does One Go About Becoming A Freemason?

"To Be One, Ask One...", is as old as the Fraternity itself. When a man decides he wants to be a Freemason, he must ask a Freemason that he knows for a sponsorship. During this sponsorship, the Freemason will provide you with a petition or application to the lodge, that must be filled out and returned to the lodge. Once completed the Master of the lodge will appoint a committee to visit with the man and his family, find out a little about him, and why he wants to be a Freemason. The committee reports to the lodge, and the lodge votes on the petition. Admission is decided by ballot and to be accepted, the ballot must be unanimous.

What If I Do Not Know A Freemason?

In many cases, one may not know a Freemason. Simply because most Freemasons choose not advertise they are one for several reasons. However, Freemasons have no problem identifying other Freemasons without ever saying a word. For those looking to join Freemasonry, it might be difficult to find a Freemason to ask. If you find yourself in this situation, simply contact the lodge and attend a dinner. At this dinner, Freemasonry will be explained to you if you any have questions, and a Freemason may volunteer to sponsor you for admission.

What Happens After My Petition Is Accepted?

If the vote is affirmative, the lodge will contact you to set the date for the Entered Apprentice Degree. However, this does not make you a full member. There are only 3 degrees in blue lodge masonry and only when the person has completed all three degrees, is he a Master Mason and a full member of the fraternity. Only Master Masons are allowed to receive the full rights and benefit of the fraternity, and attend lodge meetings.
